What is a magnetic card reader?

A magnetic card reader, also known as "magnetic stripe reader" is a hardware device which is used to read the magnetic stripe on the back of a plastic card or magnetic card.

The magnetic stripe may contain information such as access rights, account numbers or other cardholder details. The readers make it possible to read encoded magnetic cards with low (LoCo) and high (HiCo) coercive field strength.

To encode data on such a plastic card, a magnetic stripe encoder and suitable card software is required. A card reader is not suitable for this.

What does HiCo mean?

HiCo is the abbreviation for High Coercivity.

HiCo magnetic cards are coded with 2750 Oersted and can be recognized visually by a black stripe.

HiCo cards are considered to be safe compared to LoCo cards, because a higher magnetic field strength is needed to store the data. HiCo stripes are also more robust compared to external magnetic fields, which is why the overall service life is higher.

Because of these features, HiCo magnetic stripe cards are commonly found in access control, time tracking, debit and credit cards.

What does LoCo mean?

LoCo is the abbreviation for Low Coercivity.

LoCo stripes are encoded with 300 Oersted and recognizable by the brown color. Information is stored here with a lower coercive force. This ensures that the LoCo cards are considered less secure. The data stored on the magnetic stripe can be deleted much easier.

LoCo magnetic stripe cards are used where card data is frequently changed and the need for security is limited. These are, for example, gift cards, bonus cards or key cards for hotel rooms.
